Skin care you can eat!

 

I’ve always noticed that my skin responds to natural remedies rather than harsh commercial skin products. I have combination to oily skin that is acne prone and easily scars and in the past, I’ve tried scrubbing and over washing without moisturising because I thought it would get rid of the oil but it only made it worse. I used so-called “acne clearing” products which I thought would help but it was just way too harsh and probably caused more inflammation rather than reducing it. I also found that when I used too many new products too often, even if it was meant to be good for my skin, it would irritate it. It was only when I went to a simple routine with gentle and natural products and stuck to it that my skin began to improve.

Of course, there are always days where my skin is not its best and I do break out a lot. But that usually happens due to excess sugar in my diet, hormones, not washing my makeup tools often enough or even not changing my pillow case often. There are a number of other factors that also come into play but these three seem to cause the most issues. But once I clean my brushes, lay off the sugar and use simple natural treatments, my skin calms down and goes back to normal.

And So wherever I can, I always incorporate natural ingredients that can easily be found in my kitchen, because if you can eat it you can almost definitely put it on your skin. so here are some of my favourite ingredients to use on my skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This stuff is just such a skin saver for me! I use it to make a DIY toner, simple, natural and perfect for acne prone skin. To make the toner all I do is place one part apple cider vinegar in a jar and add 3 parts water. you can add in more or less apple cider vinegar depending on how sensitive your skin is. And that’s it! I use it every night after I wash my face with a cleanser. I just soak a cotton makeup pad with a bit of the toner and apply all over the face, let it dry and follow with a moisturiser.  It tones the skin, kills acne-causing bacteria and the cotton pad picks up any dead skin from the surface. Seriously every time I stop using it to try a new toner (even natural toners people rave about) my skin starts to break out. And then when I start using it again my skin calms down almost overnight.

Lemon & Honey

Couldn’t think of a better power couple. these two together can fix so many issues from a sore throat to detoxification of the digestive system to troubled skin. I use this as a mask at least once a week and it has changed my skin. Along with being blessed with oily and acne prone skin, I also get hyperpigmentation, which means that even when the acne is gone it leaves a dark scar that literally takes years to lighten back to normal skin colour. But since using the lemon and honey mask, my scars have improved so much and it leaves the rest of my skin brighter and moisturised. The Alpha Hydroxy Acids in the lemon have exfoliating and brightening properties while the vitamin C also helps the strengthen the collagen elasticity of the skin. Honey increases the skins ability to retain moisture and reduces inflammation or redness. Both these ingredients also have antibacterial properties which again assists in keeping acne at bay. I would recommend using manuka honey which has even more amazing properties and a freshly sliced lemon for best results. Pre-squeezed lemon juice or even lemon that has been cut and left overnight isn’t as effective.

To use the mask all I do is cut a lemon in half and apply a bit of the honey all over the lemon half. I then apply this all over my face in a circular motion while lightly squeezing the lemon to get some of the lemon juice out, reapply more honey if it gets used up. I usually leave it to dry for about  5 – 10 mins. I would also recommend doing this at night or if you’re going to be indoors all day because lemon juice can make your skin sensitive to sunlight and UV damage if you go out in the sun soon after.

Coconut Oil

Come on guys which natural skin care post would be complete without coconut oil. But seriously it fixes most of your problems. For skin care, I mostly just use this to remove my eye makeup. It works so well to remove stubborn mascara and at the same time nourishes your lashes for thicker, longer looking lashes. Coconut oil has made such a difference to my eyelashes in terms of length and mascara just enhances it so much more. There are so many uses for coconut oil I might have to do a separate post on it.

Charcoal

This is also one of my favourite things to use. I’ve been seeing a lot of those ads where someone brushes their teeth with charcoal and after a week their teeth are so much whiter and I thought I’ll try it for myself to see if it works. So I just got some activated charcoal and brushed my teeth with it. And it actually works! It helps polish my teeth and absorb any bacteria that is lingering on my teeth. I also like to add it to my cleanser to sometimes to turn it into a scrub and help absorb more impurities out of my skin.

Cosmetic Warrior

This isn’t really edible but the ingredients are so natural and my skin responds to this mask so well. It’s a fresh face mask from Lush so, unfortunately, it needs to be in the fridge and I have to use it up within 3 weeks. But it works so well, I usually buy it when my skin is really playing up and use it twice a week. I always use masks at night so the morning after my skin is literally glowing and the acne has calmed down a lot! I ain’t gonna lie this one smells like garlic and tea tree oil but these ingredients make it so effective as they both have antibacterial properties since bacteria is one of the main causes of acne. The Kaolin clay in this draws out impurities and the egg white adds essential amino acids to the skin surface which helps repair and restore. You only have to wear it for 5-10 mins so its a little bit of time smelling garlic but so many results.

Mandarin Rind

Ok, so this trick kinda blew my mind when I found out it works so well. So you know your lips get super dry and start to peel sometimes? You can buy sugar lip scrubs (like who doesn’t have the Lush Bubblegum lip scrub, am I right) and lip balms and it still doesn’t work. Well, now you can use the rind of a mandarin or a peel of an orange as a lip scrub. Just peel your mandarin or orange, eat it, then use the inside of the skin to scrub your lips until all the dead skin is gone. The scrubby bits will smooth your skin and the added vitamin C from the mandarin peel will help your lips retain moisture better and repair the collagen in the skin, similar to the lemon mentioned above. After scrubbing, top it off with your fave lip balm to lock in the moisture. Your welcome.
